AUTOMATIC IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM (AIS)
The Automatic Identification and Data Management System AIMS M II Marine Data Systems is the latest development of highly sophisticated Automatic Identification System (AIS).
In accordance with the efforts of the maritime authorities to ensure safe navigation for the next century, every vessel will be required to be equipped with new generation of AIS.
- Precise and reliable tracking and positioning of vessels
- Data Interchange between any mobile station, the Vessel Traffic System (VTS)
- Centre and any wide area network
- Short message service
- Telemetry applications for remote control of navigational aids e.g. lighthouses and buoys.
Mandatory Implementation Data
All ships of 300 gross tonnage and upward engaged in international voyages. All ships of 500 gross tonnage and jupwards not engaged in international voyages and passenger ships irrespective of size, shall be fitted with AIS, as follows:

Intallation of AIS Base Stations in PNG
The first five (5) base stations have just been installed in Port Moresby, Alotau, Lae, Madang and Rabaul and waiting network connection before the system can be utilised for tracking and monitoring of vessels trading in PNG waters.
