Marine Pollution Risk Assessment

MARINE POLLUTION RISK ASSESSMENT

The National Maritime Safety Authority (NMSA) is continuing to strengthen measures to address shipping-related marine pollution risks in PNG waters.

In close cooperation with the PNG Ports Corporation Ltd, NMSA is undertaking the first-ever National Marine Pollution Risk Assessment for PNG. The Risk Assessment is being undertaken in response to increases in shipping activity, driven by expanding resource projects in PNG, and also the development of new offshore industries in PNG.

The risk assessment is looking at potential spills of oil and other pollutants into PNG waters from ships and other sources, including land-based oil storage facilities, and offshore platforms.

The Risk Assessment will provide the basis for developing a new National Marine Pollution Contingency Plan (NATPLAN) for PNG, involving all stakeholders.

The Risk Assessment is being undertaken in stages, with the first report for the Port Moresby area now completed. The report is available for stakeholder comment and a PDF file can be downloaded from the NMSA web site www.nmsa.gov.pg .

Comments should be emailed to.
